Your Legacy, UTMB's Future

Historic Old Red

In 1884 Galveston businessman John Sealy left a bequest in his will, creating a hospital for the state’s first medical school. His legacy shaped health care for generations of Texans. It was a momentous act of philanthropy.

When John Sealy left $50,000 in his will to benefit “a charitable purpose” in his adopted home town of Galveston, scarcely could he have imagined the fruits his philanthropic seed would bear.

His bequest was the linchpin of UTMB’s creation, inspiring the Texas Legislature to allocate the funds to open the university’s doors. But his support did much more than make the first John Sealy Hospital possible. It unleashed a legacy of philanthropy that lives with us to this day. So much of what UTMB is and does can be traced back to that seminal moment of visionary generosity.

Through the tools of gift and estate planning, UTMB friends and alumni are following in Sealy’s footsteps. Whether you include UTMB in your will, make gifts of appreciated stock, or use a giving strategy that pays you a source of life income, your smart financial decisions will shape the university, and the populations it serves, for generations to come. What will your legacy be?
